Join us for a joyful and meaningful celebration as we honor the extraordinary journey of the Key Marco Cat — one of North America’s most remarkable archaeological treasures — and the community spirit that brought it home to Marco Island.
The Key Marco Cat Celebration is a special after-hours museum event at the Marco Island Historical Museum marking the legacy of the world-famous Key Marco Cat and the community effort that made its return possible. The event begins with a memorable program featuring a musical performance by Kat Epple that will set the tone for inspiration and celebration. This will be followed by the story behind “the Return” of the island’s most famous artifact and a dramatic historical reenactment. Afterward, the museum comes alive with refreshments, interactive experiences, and continued live music in the Calusa Village — perfect for guests of all ages.
During the program, hear from former Curator of Collections Austin Bell, who will share the years-long journey to secure the loan of the Key Marco Cat and the significance of its return in April 2026. Reenactor Dr. Carolyn Rosenfeld will then reprise her portrayal of Wells Sawyer, the Key Marco dig’s artist and photographer. The program emphasizes the unprecedented nature of this artifact’s loan, the importance of conservation, and the community pride that made this moment possible.
The celebration continues with interactive fun — guests can enjoy refreshments, take photos at a special Cat photo spot, enter a raffle for a prize basket, and participate in a heartwarming “Love Letters to the Cat” experience for both kids and adults.
