Word Search

This is the classic word search game created using significant items in Marco Island’s history.  It’s easy to play – just click on the image to go to the game online.  There is no need to download any software. Once there, locate each word from the list and highlight using your cursor. As  you find and highlight them, a line is drawn through the word indicating you found it.  Remember, the words may be vertical, horizontal, backwards and on the diagonal. When finished, click on your browser’s “back” arrow to return to the MIHS website.

The location of the words change each time you play, so it’s a different game every time!

Have Fun!

Philafelinia – Marco Island Then And Now by Merald Clark

“I Spy” Objects Search

In 1896, Frank Hamilton Cushing led an expedition to Marco Island organized jointly by the Smithsonian Institution and the University Museum, Philadelphia.  He created a major sensation among archaeologists when he found an until then totally unknown Native American culture that he named “Key Dwellers.”

It turned out that among Cushing’s finds were some of the finest artifacts ever unearthed on the Eastern Seaboard.   More than 2000 objects, practically the entire inventory of a village, came to light from a swamp near where the Old Marco Inn now stands. Merald Clark’s mural found in the entrance of the Marco Island Historical Museum’s Paradise Found exhibit brings this archaeological dig and the prehistoric village it uncovered to life.

Dig through the layers of Marco Island’s history to find the objects.

The first in our “Windows and Doors to History” puzzle series features Merald Clark’s artistic interpretation of the Archaic Indians who inhabited nearby Horr’s Island between 5,000 and 4,400 years ago.
