Social Media Policy Voted & Approved July 18, 2023 Marco Island Historical Society Board of Directors
The purpose of the Marco Island Historical Society’s social media presence is to share relevant content related to our mission with the online community and foster open dialogue around our local history and heritage. We strive to create informative, inspiring platforms where everyone is welcome and encouraged to discuss and engage with the Historical Society’s collection, exhibits, public programs, and noteworthy news.
To help us maintain an accessible and positive space for all, we kindly ask those who engage with our social media content to respect the following guidelines.
Protect privacy
Avoid posting any personal information. Any posts that include an email address, phone number, address or other personal information will be removed.
Stay on topic
We welcome discussion, and sharing your own related historical recollections and research, asking questions, and learning from posted conversations will always be encouraged. We do ask, however, that users keep comments relevant to the original post, and refrain from duplicating the same message across multiple unrelated posts. Off-topic posts or comments are likely to be removed.
Be respectful
Posts, comments, and replies on Historical Society channels should be respectful and promote a welcoming and safe social space for all users. Please avoid posting any hateful, defamatory, threatening, obscene, profane, discriminatory, or harassing comments, images or videos, or anything that could be otherwise deemed disparaging or demeaning to others. Such comments and posts will be removed and will most likely result in you being banned or blocked.
Don’t advertise or self-promote
Avoid making posts or comments that serve as advertisements for yourself or others. We will remove any links, images, messages, and content that advertise or promote the goods or services of individuals, organizations, businesses or causes, and such postings will most likely result in you being banned or blocked.
Don’t infringe on intellectual property
Avoid posting anything that you do not have a lawful right to post or is not your original creative content. Third-party intellectual property, such as any copyright-protected material, trademarks or logos that come to our attention will be removed, and you risk being banned or blocked.
Maintain the social space’s integrity
Avoid posting content or comments that include spam or fraudulent links, suggest or encourage illegal activity, or contain information that is intentionally false, inaccurate, or misleading. Such comments and posts will be removed and will most likely result in you being banned or blocked.
Know what to expect
Our social media channels are regularly monitored by a small team of Historical Society staff Monday through Friday during business hours (9:00 – 5:00 EST), excluding holidays. Although we aim to respond to questions and concerns as quickly as possible, please note that some inquiries can take longer to resolve. For more immediate assistance, please get in touch with us through our website’s Contact Us page.
The MIHS strives to ensure any information we post on our social media is correct at the time of publishing. Although we may post links to other organizations, we are not responsible for the accuracy of other organizations or businesses. Retweeting or reposting does not necessarily imply an endorsement. The views expressed by our followers are their own and may not represent the views of the Marco Island Historical Society, our Directors, employees, or affiliates.
