All of us are united by the passion we feel for this Island we call home. We have become family, and nothing could have reminded us of that fact more than when Hurricane Irma tore through Marco on September 10. Our homes, yards and even our hearts were battered, but the outpouring of community spirit is the memory that will be our legacy.
How we collectively respond and rise to disasters is what defines us as a community, and Marco Island’s response made all of us proud. As your Marco Island Historical Society (MIHS), we were able to witness and most importantly record the history that was being made. Your stories and others were woven into the fabric of our history as the winds of Irma shaped and further defined the spirit of Marco Island.
There is much to celebrate as we turn our attention to the coming year. Three years ago, we started an ambitious strategic plan and as we head into the homestretch of that plan – the final goal is on the horizon. One year from now, Marco Island will be welcoming back HOME some very important icons from our past – several of the most significant Calusa treasures and the legendary Key Marco Cat.
This is both exciting and daunting. We are making an investment of $350,000 in permanent museum improvements, that will pay dividends for our community beyond the two and one-half years the artifacts will be on display. From increased tourism revenue, to once in a lifetime educational experiences, to igniting our community spirit, the return of these artifacts to Marco Island (the first time together since 1896!) will create history.
Thanks to your generous past support we laid the foundation for this homecoming: we completed the museum exhibits, hired professional staff, and became a highly rated tourist destination. You can be proud that your museum is nationally recognized – that was the bedrock that led to the successful artifact loans with the Smithsonian and the University of Pennsylvania. Now it is time to make history again!
Please join us in creating a special home and world-class display for these 1000+ year old treasures. Gifts of all sizes are warmly welcomed.
Whatever gift you choose to make, it will be deeply appreciated by all of your MIHS family. Your friendship and support have been the inspiration for our work.
With deep gratitude and respect,
MIHS Executive Director
P.S. Remember that gifts made before the end of the year can be deducted from your 2017 taxes.
